General Information
Get to know Modern Skips and how we operate.
Are you a local company?
Yes, we are a family-run business based in Essex, proudly serving the local community since 1985. We know the area and its waste management needs inside and out.
What areas in Essex do you cover?
We provide skip hire and rubbish clearance services across Essex, including Romford, Upminster, Thurrock, Barking, Grays, Basildon, Brentwood, and the surrounding areas. Enter your postcode on our website for instant confirmation.
Are you environmentally responsible?
Absolutely. We are committed to reducing landfill impact. All waste is taken to our fully licensed transfer station where we recycle as much material as possible.
I'm not sure what service I need. Can you help?
Of course! Our friendly team is always happy to advise you on whether a skip hire or our manned rubbish clearance service is best for your project. Just give us a call.
Are you licensed to dispose of waste?
Yes, we are a fully licensed waste carrier. You can be confident that your waste will be handled legally, responsibly, and in compliance with all Environment Agency regulations.
Skip Hire & Services
Everything you need to know about choosing and using our skips.
What sizes of skips do you offer?
We offer a wide range of sizes to suit any project: 2-yard, 4-yard, 6-yard, 8-yard, 10-yard, and 12-yard skips. You can find detailed dimensions and photos for each on our website.
What can I NOT put in a skip?
For safety and legal reasons, you cannot place hazardous materials in a skip. This includes asbestos, chemicals, paint, solvents, batteries, electrical appliances (like fridges), tyres, gas cylinders, and medical waste.
What happens if I overload the skip?
For safety on the roads, skips must not be overloaded above the top of its sides. If a skip is overloaded, we may be unable to collect it until the waste is leveled off, or an overloading fee may apply.
Do I need to be present for delivery or collection?
It is helpful but not always essential. Our drivers are skilled at positioning skips safely. However, you must ensure there is adequate, clear access and that any parking permissions are secured.
What is the difference between skip hire and rubbish clearance?
With skip hire, we deliver an empty skip to you, you fill it at your own pace, and we collect it when you’re done. Our rubbish clearance service involves our team coming to your property, loading the waste themselves, and taking it away immediately—perfect if you need help with the heavy lifting or have limited space.
Can a skip be placed on my driveway?
Yes, placing a skip on your private driveway is usually the simplest option as it often doesn’t require a council permit. Please ensure the surface is solid enough to support the weight of a loaded skip.
Do I need a Permit?
This depends on where you’re going to place your skip. If it’s going to be placed on private land, you won’t need a permit. But if it needs to be placed on the road then you will need a permit from your local authority.
Pricing & Payment
Transparent costs and easy payment options for your convenience.
What is included in the cost of skip hire?
The cost of your skip hire includes delivery and collection of the skip and up to 14 days hire. Permits are not included.
Are there any additional costs?
Additional costs are rare but may apply in specific situations, such as needing a council permit for road placement, overloading the skip, or including prohibited items that require special disposal.
How can I pay for my skip?
We accept payment by cash, card, or secure payment link through Elavon. Payment is taken at the time of booking.
Do you require a deposit?
Full payment is taken at the time of booking to secure your skip and delivery date.
